Now that a first wave of technical facilities has been designed and many have been constructed, this third BAT workshop  focused on results achieved and the lessons learned.  The overall theme was that of a report card from the perspectives of a client, owner, user, or facilities manager with regard to achieving the needs of these technically demanding facilities.

Each presentation focused on sharing knowledge about a particular project in areas such as:
Planning

• How the project idea was conceived
• How the funding was accomplished; any hiccups along the way?
• Procedures and hurdles in procurement.
• Site Selection Decision: Any site analysis made prior to design start?
• Issues addressed during the site selection process

Design

• Method of selection for A/E
• Decision making process
• Availability of researchers in developing the concept
• Levels of involvement of researchers
• Concept Development
• Were all parties aware of the level of technical sophistication involved in a building of this sort? Did this awareness (or lack of it) affect the design process? Were any resources particularly useful?
• Were expectations realistic? Did they fit the budget? How were the differences reconciled?

Construction

• Construction Delivery method:
• Timing for selection of contractor vs. architect and engineer
• Decision process for selecting contractor
• Quality control/quality assurance process during construction
• Timing overlap between various contractors (General, hookup, move contractors)

Post Construction

• Comparison of post construction performance to design specifications
• Equipment and tool fitup, hookup and user move in process
• Unforeseen environmental interferences
• Long term maintenance and operation
